Screenshot: No satellite signal is beeing receivedHave you just spent ages setting your system up, but all you're getting is a pixelated or even no picture at all, or is your display showing a strong/high signal strength bar but a weak/low signal quality bar? Make sure you haven't overlooked some cruicial steps and requirements for good reception.

With digital reception, a weak signal will cause the picture and sound to block or disappear. You should check the following (in order of priority):

  • Is the dish pointing at the right satellite? Check that under 'Services > System Setup > Signal Test' the Network ID reads 0002 (for Sky UK).
  • Is there a clear line-of-sight between your dish and the satellite? If not, you need to consider moving your dish.
  • Is the dish size large enough for the satellite you are aiming at and for your location? Check that your location is within the footprint of the satellite transponder.
  • Is the dish aligned correctly? A slight misalignment will cause a large reduction in signal strength.
  • Is the skew angle of the LNB correct? A wrong skew angle will cause low signal quality even though the signal strength is high.
  • Are the F-connectors fitted correctly? If the copper insulation touches the inner copper wire, or if the F-connector doesn't touch the outer shielding wires, strong interferences  can occur which result in a reduction in signal quality.
  • Is the coxial cable suitable for digital satellite reception? You should only use high-quality cables with proper insulation.
  • Is the cable run too long? With cable runs of over 20 meters, some signal loss will occur. This can be compensated with a signal amplifier/booster.
  • Is your digibox or LNB faulty? Try borrowing one from your neighbour's/friend's.

Can you please help me with this problem. I just installed an h-h motor and as i live in malta i set the dish on hotbird true south. i can get almost all satellites but there are some like hispaat 30 w and the 5 e which i need and seem unreachable. if i tilt dish by hand from top or bottom i seem to get them but i lose all the others almost. could it be pole alignment but i could swear i fixed it properly. thanks regards.

  2. Alan says:

    Philip,

The pole must be absolutely vertical after everything is attached to it.
The dish elevation must be correct.
Your dish size should be suitable for receiving those satellites. Check http://www.dishpointer.com for footprints and dish sizes.

    Hope this helps
    Alan

What is a posible problem and solution for my satellite dish Tv has a difference in audio and video alignment. do not match for a fraction of seconds?

  4. Alan says:

    TG:
I guess that would be your receiver. Try doing a reset.

  5. G A Chase says:

My postcode is UK :TS9 5AG – your website apparently sites me in Germany not UK with Dish calculations of Azimuth -34.7 and elevation 22.4.

However your google map set up finds me correctly at 157.3 Azimuth and 32.7 elevation !

Can you please advize which is correct, and where 157.3 Azimuth is on the compass compared to South.

  6. Alan says:

    GA Chase:
Not sure what you mean. If you point the marker at your house, it will give you the azimuth and elevation plus a line where to point your dish. South would be 180 degrees or straight down on the map.

    Hi,
i am not sure if this is the way to start a new thread.
On holiday in austrian tirol, we unplugged the power to TV and Satellite top box. When powered up again it said “No Signal”. Local company insisted they needed to come round but we were unable to be there. It happened again with the kids unplugging, this time while all components switched on….it cost a lot each time for the company to re-set??? if that’s what they did.
Can anyone say whats going on here? and sureley it’s something we could have done ourselves?
    thanks in advance
    Steve

  8. Alan says:

    Steve:

Something not right here. By unplugging the receiver, the card doesn’t get it regular updates so after a few hours or even days some channels won’t work (all the cheapo special interest ones will do though) and you need to leave the card in the digibox for about 24 hours to get it re-activated.

If it’s says no signal though then your dish is not aligned properly but since you’re in Tirol, are you sure you don’t get that only on the BBC and ITV channels? For these channels you need a bigger dish.

So, overall, I suggest you check the shopping channels first. If you don’t get a signal on those then you need to have your alignment checked.

Every time we get light rain i lose most of my sky channels when it rains quite heavy i lose every single channel on sky and it says LOSS OF SIGNAL .But when the weather is good all channels are OK .Could you please give me any advice

  10. Alan says:

    Anthony:
Your dish isn’t perfectly aligned. Without undoing any bolts, push the dish slightly in all 4 directions and watch the quality bar on screen. If anything changes, undo the bolts, do a tiny(!) adjustment and tighten the bolts again.

    Hi,
I’ve just purchased a Grundig freesat HD box. Connected it up and all was fine… after about 20 mins the signal was lost and never to be found. The dish has been in use for Sky so alignment etc. should be ok. I can get nothing out of the box now except the menus appear ok on the tv screen
    Can you help?

  13. Alan says:

    Peter:
Check your connections, and try your old box – maybe the new one developed a fault. Also check signal strength and quality, maybe your new box is not as strong as your old one – in that case a very slight re-adjustment of the dish should help.

hi there, im from u.s and im using directv there. great pix there but i wonder ?? i have from the transponders of directv 100- 91 % that kind of great but?? the pixutre seems to block up there on cnn ch 202 and i just noticed that the directv digi rg-6 cable goes to the block and the other rg-6 is from g.e tvcable to the tvset and its not from directv cable there. any ideas??

  15. James S says:

I recently purchased a quad LNB so that i can install freesat for my kids. i currently have sky with a single LNB and have good signal and quality. But when i fit the quad LNB i get no signal on all f connectors. i have tried rotating the LNB in its bracket but still nothing- do you think the LNB is faulty?

  16. Alan says:

    James:
    1. Is it really a quad lnb and not a quattro lnb? You need a quad lnb.
    2. Maybe you moved the dish while installing the lnb – try the single again.
    3. Is it all well connected?
    4. It might be faulty.

I live in spain and recieve most uk channels but cannot get ITV 2, 3 or 4 but can get ITV + 1. Many neighbours get all channels with better signal strength, mine is only about 20% on the bar indicator. What can I do to rectify this? I am not technically minded so plain words wpuld be appreciated. Thanks

  18. Alan says:

    John:
    1. Is your dish 100% aligned?
    2. LNB skew properly adjusted?
    3. Same dish size as your neighbours, good quality make dish?
    4. Same LNB?
    5. Good cable which is not too long?
    6. Same receiver?

I have aligned it to the degrees recommended and also it is pointing in the same direction as my neighbours dishes???

    Any ideas??

I have the basic freeview Sky setup. In the main it is fine but I get interference on ClassicFM and pixelation only on 2 of the free film channels that the fitter says I ought to be able to receive. Just everything was changed except the dish. Any help would be appreciated. Curiously in this area of awful terrestial reception (IP12 2AF) it is the ClassicFM absence which causes me most grief. Thank you.

We currently watch tv through satellite and a sky box, though we no longer subscribe to sky we watch free to air channels. All was well but today channel 5 comes up with “no satellite signal being received”. I assume this has something to do with the fact that channel 5 in the south have switched off their terestrial signal yesterday but I cannot understand why it has affected the satellite signal. Help please as i am missing vital story line on neighbours!!!!!

  26. Abdul says:

After setting my dish i was very pleased to see all the channels are working perfectly. Signal was 73+. The problem is one piticular channel with the same signal strengh as the others loose signal completly when the sky is cloudy and when it rains slietly but as the wether gets better may be one or two hours late the signal comes back normal like before. Can you please help.

Bought a new receiver (illusion M3) and lined up the dish with the correct coordinates as I can get a 80%strong signal with 100% picture quality for all Astra satellites. My problem is I cannot receive British channels. All Spanish, German, French, Austrian ok but only Sky news, BBC news from GB.

What’s my problem? Dish too small, wrong satellite, not exactly correct coordinates? Help!!!!!!!!

    Hi,
I have a TM5400 80cm motorised system. I was having problems with the motor so I carried out a factory reset. Any ideas please.

  42. Casper says:

Hi! I have just bought a satellite set up kit from B&Q with a 45cm dish. My problem is while the signal strength shows over 70% for most of the satellites, the signal quality remains 0% whatever I do, and cant find any channel neither with manual or automatic installation.
    Appreciate your help.

  43. Alan says:

Casper: You’ve got the wrong satellite I’d say.

  44. Warren says:

  45. Paul Roberts says:

Hi Alan, I am having problems with what I beleive to be one polarity on my Sky channels. I can obtain quite a few channels such as BBC1, living, discovery etc. But on the other polarity channels such as Sky3 I am getting major pixelation problems so much so that these channels are unwatchable. My signal strength is at about 85% and the signal quality is slightly less at around 70% estimated. I have a 90cm dish and a brand new gold LNB. When changing channels to the other polarity the new channel does not come on and you either have to go back to the channel you were watching and then change back before it changes or turn the box on and off then on again!

Any ideas on what the problem may be please?

    Best wishes

    Hi
I live in Cyprus – we have a 3.6m dish and a sky box from england, signal strength and quality are ok and we receive most channels.
We can not receive ITV 1 or BBC1 & 2 – do I need to change the sky box or settings

    Regards

    Kevin

  47. Alan says:

Warren: You’ve got the wrong satellite

Paul: Weird, maybe faulty lnb? Can you borrow another lnb from somewhere?

Kevin: Do you know the required dish size for Astra 2D in Cyprus? If people can receive those channels with a 3.6m dish you would need to look into fine-tuning dish alignment, reducing cable length, getting better cable and lnb and a receiver which is known for good fringe reception.

  48. peter morris says:

Hi Alan, recently installed D.I.Y. sat dish perfect reception until 2 weeks ago in the storms.Having realigned the dish and the T.V.confirming the same reception as before it says I have no signal. Hi,
My sky+ box has broken so I purchased a standard sky box in its place however it only has space for 1 input cable from the dish and I have 2 cables set up for the sky+. Do I need an adaptor or should 1 of these cables attached to my new standard box give me sky anyway?
I tried but it did not work. Or is it the sky+ viewing card not compatible with normal box?
    Thanks

Can anyone tell me if it is ok to put a saterlite dish up onto thr pole carrying my normal tv aerial. Also are there any reasons why this cannot be done thanks

  52. David says:

    Hi,
I live in the south of france just north of aix-en-provence and have just installed my satellite dish(without a sat finder). I am getting about 90% signal strength but only 10% quality. I am receiving the bbc channels(1234) and c4 and I can also get itv2+1 but not itv2,3 or 4 and the same with some of the other 4 channels. Is my dish out of alignment or is does the skew need adjusting? Why would it be I can pick up some channels from bbc or itv network but not others? Cheers in advance.

  53. satandpcguy says:

ITV2,3,4 are on similar frequencies to BBC1 (but not BBC1 london)
BBC1 london, bbc2,3,4 are all on the same horizontal frequency – and C4 and itv2+1 are also on horizontal frequencies
so it appears that you are not getting the verticals channels – bbc1, itv2,3,4 and C4+1,e4.if.
Dish alignment is probably the main reason.
LNB skew is also critical – use the “signal strength” screen on the sky box to tweek the LNB skew – as that screen measures the 17778 frequency that is very skew sensitive.

  54. David says:

Cheers, satandpcguy, will give it a go. Might have to buy a sat finder after all!

  55. David says:

Bought a sat finder and the dish was not far out of position at all(next to nothing), turned the LNB a few degrees anti clockwise and all is good, have all the channels that I could not get before:)

  56. David W says:

I live in Belgium in a semi rural area – no large industries. About two weeks ago each morning I suddenly started getting intermitent breaks to my satellite reception (all channels). I lose sound and vision during the breaks (ten to fifteen seconds) They continue until about 1400 and then stop Obviously something is interfering with the signal, but what is it likely to be and how can I try to trace it. I have had satellite for almost twenty years and the signal has always been good.

  57. satandpcguy says:

First thing is to check the cables (connections and for any splits and water ingree into the cable), and maybe the LNB. If you can try another receiver on the set up.

Hi, I live in West Wales my satellite system works well but my mother-in-laws (which is an identical system to mine) has stopped receiving BBC 1 Wales and BBC2 Wales (and a couple of others) although still getting all the other BBC channels. I have swapped my box and LNB with hers and tried realigning her dish to no avail.

All her missing channels are on the same frequency – 10788mhz.

    Any suggestions?

  61. satandpcguy says:

What about BBC1 and 2 Northern Ireland?
    And ITV2 and ITV4?
All these are on vertical frequencies, and so if you are unable to receive these also, then consider:
checking the cableing (any cracks or joins or disruptions (ie nails) in the cable)
check the connections at the LNB and receiver end
a new LNB (but you have tried a new one to no avail)
    failing that the dish alignment,

  62. Steve says:

Hi. Dont know if you could help with this. I have a TF 5000 Fe decoder with two LBNs for Hotbird and Astra. We have had this setup for 6 – 7 years.

Recently (last week) I have been having problems with the signal quality. I have lost some channels all together (France 24 for example) and others are heavily pixelated. For most of the week this was only really a problem in the mornings and the signal would settle down during the day (but missing channels never come back). So in the evening the picture is excellent. Leaving the decoder on all night normally seemed to help but this morning (after leaving the decoder on all night) the signal is very poor and doesnt seem to be getting better.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks.

  63. Steve says:

Sorry to follow up my own post – just a quick update. The picture IS now starting to get better (as I mentioned in my first post). Still no 100% but it is possible to see the images and the quality bar is now stable at ~ 100% (before it was jumping all over the place between 50% – 99%).

    Thanks

  64. satandpcguy says:

    Hi
Lower signal than normal can be due to a number of things:
the dish has moved and needs realigning,
the LNB is on its way out,
the connections on the LNB and receiver need to be checked,
or SNOW on the dish – remove the snow!

  65. Edward says:

Hi, can anybody tell me why I can’t get some chans from Eurobird 1 such as Russia Today (11.623H) and Pop (11.642V) I am using an 80 cm dish, quatro lnb and multiswitch. I have 90% quality and very high strength. I’ve tried different lnb, multiswitch and three different Sky HD boxes.

  66. Rob says:

BBC has recently changed its bbc1 london and others on to a much weaker transponder, this is to use the other transponder for hd see bbc web site

  67. satandpcguy says:

    Hi,
If by”90% quality and very high strength” you mean thats is what is on the Sky test screen, then that screen normally measures the 11778 frequency, and can bear no resembleable to the frequency of the channels you have lost.

Are you sure both the LNB and multiswitch are working correctly (ie have you tried a full range of frequencies to make sure it is just the EB1 frequencies?)

So, if you know your dish is aligned OK, you cabling is ok, your LNB is OK , and your multiswitch is OK then there is only one thing left. Do you have a DECT phone, or wireless internet router or similar neat the cable / box. If so move it away. Some of the channels on 11642v show adverts saying these things can interfere with the signals.

  68. Edward says:

Hi, the quality and strength were measured on a Promax digital meter. The lnb has been changed to an Invacom and a second m/s has been tried. Test cables have been run from dish to m/s and from m/s to r/x, all to no avail. I’ll check for dect etc and let you know. Thanks.

  69. Rob says:

Just discovered another problem re loss of BBC1 london and BBC2 England There is a new sat freq coming up 2 degrees further west of astra. Although a different set up the basic freq is very close to the 10773 transponder and I am getting major interference from this sat as it comes within the beamwidth of the dish.

  70. Trev says:

    Hi Guys
we are Sky Subscribers and during the day also at night the the picture breaks up with a distortion in sound and picture, it is like as if some one is trying to jam our signal (I dare say that this is the case) however the interference is annoying. Any solutions/ideas?

  71. satandpcguy says:

rob: yes Badr 5 at 26 east has fired up some transponders that have frequencies very close to those on Astra 2d.
This WILL NOT affect anyone in the UK, but will probably have more of an effect on the very fringes of Astra 2d reception – Cyprus, Canaries, where Badr 5 is more stonger..

  72. satandpcguy says:

Trev: Failing signal can be down to a number of things. It may help if you post your location and size of dish.Is the loss on all channels, or only a few channels? Have you a DECT (cordless) phone or wireless internet router near the TV / cable / receiver?
But generally, go through the usual checks: check the dish alignment, the cabling, connections and LNB. Even try another receiver on your own system to try and determine if your receiver is going.

If all else fails, call Sky and get one of their engineers to look at it – I think their rate for a call out is £65, and so best to see what you can do yourself.

  73. Val says:

Hi We lose the sound through our free sat box, have to turn TV off and on again, then the sound is back.

  74. satandpcguy says:

Val:Check the connections between your freesat box and your TV. Dont just wiggle the cables, physically remove them and reinsert them into the connections.

Also, in the menu system you could try and find the option to see if your box has the latest software, and download the latest software for your box.

  76. satandpcguy says:

    stuart:
French and German channels means you have aligned your satellite dish to Astra 1 at 19 east, and not Astra 2 at 28 east

  77. Kash says:

    Hello
I have been using my sky pansonoic box in germany without any major problems since 2005. We have now moved house in the same area a couple of streets away. Before I had single dish and one LNB. Now I have larger dish with 2 LNB 1 for sky 28.2 and 1 for german 19.2. But now I have lost ITV1 , ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, E4, E4+ , comedy central + . I still get ITV+1 , ITV2+, ITV3+, ITV4+. Is it possible both systems are causing this problem ?

  78. satandpcguy says:

You may find that with one dish, it may not be able to get both 28 and 19 at the same time. And thus, as you are trying to get two satellite on one dish, your dish may nt be aligned properly to 28.

  79. graham says:

hi, i wonder if you can help im losing e4 more4 and film 4 in the early evening everything else is good ive checked alignment, scew, elevation could it be the focal length from the dish to the lnb? is this critical? im in valencia, spain.

    hope you can help graham

  80. satandpcguy says:

graham: what sized dish do you have? valencia is a HUGE area, and the signal varies greatly from north to south valencia and dish size is critical around the area.
Film4 you will lose before e4 and more 4. Film4, (like C4 England) is on the weaker “horizontal” frequency, so its reception is poorer. Even on a 2.4m dish in many areas in Valencia it will not be available past 7pm.
E4 and M4 are on the “vertical” frequencies and will be available for longer. BUt in the last few months I have noticed that these channels have been pixelating, where are before reception was OK 24/7.
How have you checked alignment? Ideally a good meter is required, and not a “beeper” unit.
Yes, focal distance is critical, but it depends on your dish make / model, and size.

  81. Kash says:

Update from Kash. The problem was with a faulty LNB. Now I have all channels. I also havw a stronger signal then before. There is a small problem now though. Every now and again I lose picture and I get the pixel break up. It is only at night and only on certain channels. It is very sparadic so I cant contact the company who installed the system until it gets worse. Could this also be faulty LNB issue ?

  82. satandpcguy says:

kash:reception issues can be down to a number of things, one as you have found out, is LNB issues. Others include cable issues, dish alignment, dish too small for the area, line of sight being blocked, birds on the LNB arm, receiver issues or even LNB skew angle. Its a process of elimination

  83. Dave says:

I have no signal coming through to a Pace Sky box at all,I have used a Signal finder to align box following instructions and its showing a good signal.

I have also tried another receiver and still I receive no signal ( no bars on system setup screen )

  84. satandpcguy says:

Dave: check the cables between the LNB and the receiver, there may be a bad connection or short circuit. Also, the signal meter will only show you if you are on A satellite, and not the actual UK TV satellites…so you may be getting a “good signal” from another satellite not used by the Sky box…

I need some help. I have an samsung dsr 9000 vi reciever which has preset satellites including hotbird 1-5. I have just learned that hotbird 1-5 are discontinued and are now called hotbird 6,7,8, and 9.
Can anyone tell me if I have to buy a new reciever or will the same reciever work for the new hotbird satellites.
    Pls help.

  86. satandpcguy says:

you should not have to get a new receiver. The same receiver should work with the new birds. just majke sure your “network search” is turned on so the receiver updates its tables with all the frequencies carried on the satellites

i live in south wales. i am frequently experiencing picture and sound disturbances on my bush satellite receiver. the picture fragments or flickers and the sound includes loud and soft cracks. this occurs for varying lengths of time from minutes to hours. occasionally the programmes are not watchable. the interference often lasts for several hours then stops and the sound and picture becomes perfect. this may occur at about the same time on several nights then the interference totally disappears. could solar storms be responsible?

  88. satandpcguy says:

terry: probably due to any number of other things: dish alignment is out, lnb is starting to go, water in cables, bad conenction in the cables, or receiver is going.

    Hi
I am having some problms setting up a new Mk4 dish to replace the Mk3 whose bracket got damaged in high winds.
I have a sat meter and the best i can get is
    Netwrok ID 0002
    Transport Stream 07D4
I cannot get any signal stength or quality so no network lock.
Ibought the dish and quad lnb off ebay do you think it could be faulty or am i not getting the alignment close enough.
    Thanks

  91. satandpcguy says:

The Network ID and Streams indicate you are on the correct satellite.
So the issue is either the dish is not aligned perfectly, or the LNB skew (rotation) is not correct.

Anybody know anything about Satellite signals to TV? We have a new Sky box, new LNB and we are not receiving any signal strength or quality!!!! Driving us mad now!!! Please help1 We have tried all the usual things

  93. Jon says:

Nadine: what “usual things” have you tried?
No signal can be down to a number of things: dish not lookign at the correct satellites, dish not aligned, LNB not aligned, LNB skew not correct, loose cable connections – all need to be checked to make sure there is a signal going to the receiver

  94. Nadine Evans says:

Hi Jon… Thanks for the answer… the usual things tried are as follows:
    1. New sky box bought
    2. Got power to new LNB bought, but still no signal strength showing on the Sky box
    3. Tried realigning according to print out and correct coordinates
    4. Cables all checked and sleeving checked
    5. Power checked at dish end with voltmeter
    6. Ohm meter places across LNB with no change registered

    Many thanks!

  95. satandpcguy says:

No signal strength or quality is usually down to dish not aligned properly, or the LNB skew is not correct.

A simple print out (or using the wonderful dishpointer tool) on their own is not really good enough to align a dish – at least a basic sat beeper is required, along with the box and a portable tv by the dish so you can see if your adjustments make a difference. Doing it without a meter or beeper is like liiking for a needle in a haystack – a few mm off is all it can take to have no signal, or have the dish pointing to another satellite!

It can also be an issue where by (if you are not in the UK) your dish is too small to receive that particular frequency that is measured by the sky boxes signal test screen.

  96. Nadine Evans says:

Dear chaps!!!! A massive thank you!!!! we have resolved the problem with a tracker thingy! Thank you so much for all your advice!
