Over the past few years, SES Astra have been replacing their old Astra 2A, 2B and 2D satellites with new satellites 2E 2F and 2G.
And the aging Eutelsat 28A has also been cleared of channels.
Now all UK TV channels are being transmitted from the three new satellites 2E 2F and 2G.
This has meant that in the past few weeks, many channels have been changing satellites, beams and in some cases frequencies.
For viewers in the UK this should have had little impact. In fact most viewers in the UK should have noticed they are not getting stronger signals than before.
However, for viewers outside the UK, these changes may have had more of an impact.

The three new UK TV satellite have different shaped “beams” than their predecessors.
This has meant that in some areas reception has worsened.
Some UK TV channels that used to be on an easy to receive European beam, are now on a harder to receive UK beam.
In most cases this is nothing to do with Sky, who many people mistakenly believe own and control the satellites. It is all down to the channel owners, who decide what beam they want their channels to be on, which will be down to how much they want to reduced their signal overspill into TV territories where they do not have the rights to broadcast their content.

Some upset viewers, who have lost their UK TV channels are a result of these changes generally use the “We are all in Europe, so why cannot we have our TV”.
Well this is all down tot he programme and event rights holders, who sell their programmes to broadcasters in individual countries.
A UK broadcasters cannot really transmit their programmes in Spain, for example, as the Spanish broadcaster will have bought the rights to show that programme in Spain. Usually these rights are for huge sums of money, and are usually for exclusive right to those programmes. Until how programmes are sold on an country by country basis by rights holders is looked into, then it will still be difficult to watch UK TV programmes outside the UK.
