Today Channel 5 HD moved satellites and frequencies.

Channel 5 HD moved from a Sky operated transponder on the European beam, to the Channel 5 operated transponder on the UK beam.

Channel 5HD can now be found on the same transponder as Channel 5’s other channels, including 5STAR and Spike.

Channel 5HD frequency is on Astra 2G transponder 57, 10964 H, Symbol Rate 22000 FEC 5/6.

Sky digiboxes will automatically update to the new frequency.

This move may simply be Channel 5 putting all its channels on their own transponder, meaning they can save a bit of money by not having to pay for it to be on a Sky transponder.

There is also speculation that this move to the UK beam may mean that Channel 5 HD, which is currently encrypted and part of the Sky HD subscription package, may move to becoming free to air and available subscription free, and available on Freesat. This can be emphasised by the fact that recently Ofcom, the media regulator, has granted a licence for Channel 5 HD on Freeview.

This move to the UK beam will mean the loss of this channel for some expats viewing in fringe reception areas like the south of Spain (Costa del Sol) and Portugal. For some areas of Spain, like the COsta Blanca, viewers should see no rely changes, as the UK beams are quite strong in that area.
